The first five titles in the Our Lives series, written by women from Somalia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam and the Canary Islands about their experiences of living in Britain, were published between 1987 and 1994. Then in 2007, with the help of a grant from Get London Reading, a competition was run to encorage students of English to tell their own stories.
